A Love loss when it comes to Twitter libel

March 5, 2011

Can you libel someone in 140 characters?

Just ask rocker/actress Courtney Love, who went on a Twitter-tirade about a fashion designer and was facing a multi-million dollar libel suit.

The case got settled out of court this week and there is a LOVE loss when it comes to misbehaving and using Twitter.
The rocker has to pay $430,000 and apologize for the ill-advised tweet.

This comes out to $3,071 a character. Now that is some expensive lip service. This is a case of modern-day libel at its finest.

Finally, I think it’s fair. Nowadays, celebrities write whatever they want on twitter; I feel like they’re abusing it. Just the other day rapper 50 Cent said something about the Japanese earthquake and Tsunami. These people don’t really care about what they are writing on twitter; even it is going to hurt someone else other than themselves. If it has to cost them a couple millions to realize what they’re saying; well, so be it. I don’t have any problem with that. I am all for it.
